C-reactive protein point-of-care testing for lower respiratory tract infections

Introduction

The over use of antibiotics in health care and farming is a growing concern. However, despite widespread recognition of the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) both in the general public and healthcare profession, there is still evidence of over prescribing. In the UK, roughly 79% of antibiotics are prescribed in primary care (Public Health England [PHE], 2014), and of those, over half are for respiratory tract infections which often have little evidence to support their use (Royal College of General Practitioners, PHE and Antimicrobial Stewardship in Primary Care).
